As we settle into our new year, it’s obvious why we’ve decided to ditch the prescription-only erectile dysfunction drug Viagra. This week we were asked about it and how it’s affecting the US.
According to the FDA, the drug can cause a severe drop in the blood pressure, making it unsafe for people with heart problems or those taking medications such as nitrates, alpha-blockers or a heart drug like amyl nitrite. The drug may also cause blood sugar to fall too low when combined with alcohol and other drugs.
As a result, Viagra has been linked to a dangerous drop in the blood pressure, which can be fatal. The Food and Drug Administration says it has determined the drug is not safe for use in people with diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
Viagra is already available in the US and is still under review due to being available in other countries. It is available in the UK, Ireland and Italy and is not approved by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
“Viagra, the most popular erectile dysfunction drug in the US, has been linked to an increased risk of death in patients with diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease,” said the FDA’s lead investigator, Dr. Steven Nissen.
“It is crucial that patients understand the risk and the potential benefits of Viagra and that they should be aware of the potential risk before taking it.”
In the past, patients taking Viagra were prescribed a generic version of the drug called tadalafil. That drug has been linked to a sudden drop in blood pressure, but it has not been studied in patients who take nitrates.
“The FDA has not specifically asked for a generic drug like Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction. In fact, the drug has been studied in patients who take nitrates for heart failure, angina and other conditions.”
Dr. Nissen said that while Viagra is available in many countries, it is not approved by the FDA for the treatment of heart disease or high blood pressure. While the FDA has not requested a generic version, the drug is still not approved to treat these conditions.
Viagra is currently available in the US, Europe, Japan and Canada. It is also available in the UK, Ireland and Italy, and is not approved by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
While Viagra is used as an alternative to taking the pill for erectile dysfunction, some doctors prefer to prescribe it to their patients because it is more convenient.
“It’s often used to treat heart failure, pulmonary arterial hypertension or diabetic kidney disease, but it has also been shown to be effective in the treatment of other conditions, including pulmonary arterial hypertension and diabetic nephropathy,” said Dr. Nissen.
“It can be effective for many patients and can be a safe and convenient treatment option.”
Viagra has not been approved by the FDA for the treatment of the following conditions.
1. Cardiovascular disease:Viagra is used to treat the symptoms of heart disease and hypertension.
The FDA says that Viagra should only be prescribed to men over the age of 65 years old and should not be used by men who are taking any form of nitrate medication, alpha-blockers or a heart drug like amyl nitrite.
2. Pulmonary arterial hypertension:The FDA recommends that Viagra should only be prescribed to men who have hypertension or who have established heart disease.
The drug can also be prescribed to men who are on alpha-blockers to reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death in men.
3. Cancer:Doctors have not been successful in treating erectile dysfunction due to a lack of research proving the drug’s safety.
“Since Viagra is currently FDA approved for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, a drug like it should be used only under the supervision of a healthcare provider.”
4. Diabetes:Although there is no data on the risk of diabetes when taking Viagra, doctors have warned that it could cause diabetes in some people, especially if they are taking other medications that can cause blood sugar levels to drop.
“If you are taking a nitrate medication for heart failure, angina, heart disease, high blood pressure or diabetes and you are prescribed a nitrate medication, it may cause your blood pressure to fall too low.
